The Key Purpose of this role is to be responsible for maintaining production equipment in an “as new” condition to ensure reliable and efficient plant performance. The role focuses on conducting inspections, performing corrective and preventive maintenance, identifying root causes of equipment failures, and implementing sustainable solutions. The incumbent provides specialist technical support to operations teams, coaches operators on correct equipment operation, and contributes to continuous improvement initiatives within the packaging and bottling environment.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance

  • Comply with all safety, health and environmental policies, procedures, and legislation.
  • Maintain high safety and housekeeping standards in workshops and operational areas.
  • Conduct safety inspections and identify unsafe conditions and practices.
  • Ensure maintenance tools and equipment are safe and fit for purpose.
  • Adhere to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements at all times.

 

Equipment Maintenance and Reliability

  • Inspect, maintain and repair production equipment and associated systems.
  • Plan and prepare maintenance activities and plant shutdowns.
  • Execute planned, preventive and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Ensure equipment reliability through root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Optimise equipment performance and efficiency through continuous improvement initiatives.

 

Operational Support

  • Provide technical and specialist support to shift-based teams during operations.
  • Assist with equipment fault-finding and troubleshooting.
  • Support Process Artisans and production teams in resolving technical issues.
  • Guide operators on correct machine operation and autonomous maintenance practices.
  • Support running repairs and equipment recovery activities when required.

 

Problem Solving and Continuous Improvement

  • Investigate equipment failures and recurring breakdowns.
  • Apply structured problem-solving methodologies to determine root causes.
  • Participate in failure analyses and maintenance post-mortem reviews.
  • Improve Standard Work Instructions (SWIs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and maintenance tasks.
  • Implement solutions that prevent reoccurrence of equipment failures.

 

Maintenance Planning and Administration

  • Participate in maintenance planning meetings.
  • Provide technical input into maintenance schedules and resource requirements.
  • Complete maintenance documentation and SAP-related administration.
  • Generate follow-up work requests and maintenance tags where necessary.
  • Monitor and reduce maintenance backlog while ensuring quality workmanship.

 

Teamwork and Knowledge Sharing

  • Communicate effectively with maintenance and production teams.
  • Contribute to team development and technical knowledge sharing.
  • Coach and mentor operators and artisans on machine-specific best practices.
  • Support a culture of continuous learning and operational excellence.

Minimum Requirements:

  • NTC5/N5 Technikon Qualification.
  • Trade Test Qualification in Electrical, Mechanical or Millwright disciplines.
  • National Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • 1 to 3 years technical mechanical and/or electrical experience within an FMCG environment.
  • 3 to 5 years experience in a packaging or bottling production environment.
  • Experience in packaging maintenance workshops.
  • Bottling hall and production environment experience.
  • Machine-specific maintenance and troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience working as an Artisan within an FMCG manufacturing environment is advantageous.

Technical Knowledge
