Background

Blue Ventures is a marine conservation organisation that puts people first. We support coastal fishers in remote and rural communities to rebuild fisheries and restore ocean life. Our work began two decades ago in Madagascar’s remote coastal communities and is growing globally.

Across a dozen countries, we’re partnering with traditional fishers and community organisations to design, scale, strengthen, and sustain fisheries management and conservation at the community level. We bring partners together in networks to advocate for reform and share tools and best practices to support fishing communities worldwide.

Our approach in the region is to empower small-scale fishing communities through a community-led approach that:

Equips partners with the tools to help communities build sustainable and economically viable fisheries, improve food security, develop livelihoods and resilience in climate change, and harness their power to own and sustainably manage resources.
Provides strategic organisational and leadership development, networking and learning opportunities, technical support, and funding to enable partners to develop community capacity at the Beach Management Unit (BMU) level and create lasting change in how marine ecosystems and resources are protected and managed.
Works towards securing coastal community rights to access, use, and manage local ecosystems and fisheries, and works towards legislation to secure the rights of small-scale fishers and their communities.

On the last point, we recognise an urgent need and opportunity to expand our engagement with local and national government partners to ensure sustained institutional support for community-based fisheries and management and governance models.

We are therefore seeking the support of a consultant to develop a government engagement strategy that incorporates potential strategies in Kenya and Tanzania, as well as identify regional-level influencing strategies and key partners to engage with.
