ABOUT THE POSITION
The World Bank Group is seeking a qualified Economist to join its Fiscal Policy and Growth (FPG) team for Southern and East Africa, based in Maputo, Mozambique.
The successful candidate will make significant contributions to analytical work, policy dialogue, technical assistance and lending operations, supporting Mozambique’s efforts to strengthen macroeconomic stability, fiscal and debt sustainability, domestic resource mobilisation, natural-resource revenue management, private-sector development, economic resilience and job creation.
The Economist will report to the FPG Practice Manager and work closely with the Senior Country Economist, Lead Economist, country team and other World Bank specialists.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Contribute to advisory services and analytical work in macroeconomic and fiscal management, macroeconomic modelling, data analysis, public finance, growth, jobs and private-sector development;
- Collect, analyse, validate and maintain economic, fiscal, debt, external-sector, financial and socioeconomic data related to Mozambique;
- Present findings through tables, charts, briefs, presentations and analytical notes;
- Maintain macroeconomic databases and prepare updated medium-term macroeconomic projections using economic and financial models and World Bank tools;
- Contribute to the preparation of Macro Poverty Outlooks, Economic Updates, Public Finance and Growth Diagnostics, Debt Sustainability Analyses and policy notes;
- Contribute to the design and implementation of financing operations, including Development Policy Financing (DPF);
- Support technical assistance activities and government reform programmes;
- Serve as a task leader or team member for financing operations and analytical and advisory services, according to experience;
- Support implementation of the World Bank programme in Mozambique;
- Contribute to policy dialogue with government counterparts on macro-fiscal policy, debt, domestic revenue mobilisation, natural-resource revenues, structural transformation, productivity and job creation;
- Establish and strengthen partnerships with bilateral and multilateral agencies, research institutions, academia, civil society and other stakeholders;
- Support the dissemination of World Bank knowledge products to government, development partners, civil society, academia and the private sector;
- Contribute to regional and cross-country analytical and operational activities as required.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Economics or a closely related field;
- PhD is preferred;
- A PhD may be considered equivalent to 3 years of professional experience.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience;
- Strong background in macroeconomic modelling, fiscal analysis and applied economic policy analysis;
- Strong knowledge of Mozambique’s key development challenges and policy priorities;
- Experience working with macroeconomic, fiscal, debt, external-sector and socioeconomic datasets;
- Experience producing robust and policy-relevant economic analysis;
- Experience contributing to economic reports, policy notes, technical assistance or government reform programmes;
- Experience with World Bank financing operations or similar multilateral operations is an advantage.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Fluency in:
- English
- Portuguese
