JOB PURPOSE
Sasol is seeking a Facilities Engineer I to provide engineering support for plant improvement projects, engineering studies, and technical support activities for operating and development assets.
The successful candidate will contribute to the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of facilities through the application of engineering principles, standards, and best practices.
The role supports engineering activities throughout the project lifecycle, including conceptual studies, front-end engineering, detailed engineering, construction, commissioning, start-up, and handover to Operations.
The Facilities Engineer I will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including Process, Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Safety, Maintenance, and Operations personnel.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support engineering studies, project activities, and technical improvement initiatives;
- Support the integration of technical activities, stakeholders, contractors, and interfaces with other disciplines;
- Contribute to integrated discipline engineering plans;
- Support project execution in accordance with approved schedules and objectives;
- Participate in facility performance monitoring and optimisation activities;
- Assist in preparing and reviewing engineering scopes of work, technical specifications, and contractor requirements;
- Participate in engineering reviews, technical assurance processes, risk assessments, and quality management activities;
- Support the implementation of Engineering Technical Quality Plans (ETQP);
- Ensure compliance with project engineering specifications, procedures, standards, and applicable engineering codes;
- Assist in identifying, assessing, and mitigating technical risks;
- Contribute to cost-effective engineering solutions;
- Support budget preparation, cost estimation, tracking, and reporting;
- Assist in monitoring engineering contractor performance;
- Support initiatives aimed at improving facility reliability, availability, and productivity;
- Participate in engineering optimisation and continuous improvement activities;
- Contribute to project and operational performance objectives;
- Support the implementation of lessons learned and best practices;
- Demonstrate commitment to Safety, Health, Environment and Risk (SHER) principles;
- Participate in hazard identification, risk assessments, and incident investigations when required.
FORMAL EDUCATION
Bachelor’s Degree in:
- Civil Engineering;
- Chemical Engineering;
- Electrical Engineering;
- Mechanical Engineering;
- Instrumentation Engineering;
- Or another relevant Engineering discipline.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience;
- Experience or exposure to engineering studies, project execution, facility operations, or maintenance activities;
- Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams;
- Experience in production facility operations, maintenance, or reliability improvement will be an advantage.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Basic understanding of project development phases and engineering design processes;
- Understanding of project delivery methodologies;
- Familiarity with engineering codes, standards, and statutory requirements relevant to the Oil & Gas industry;
- Exposure to contractors and engineering service providers is advantageous;
- Understanding of health, safety, environmental, and risk management requirements within industrial operations;
- Willingness to travel for business purposes and support field activities when required.
