Head Driver, Embassy of Ireland, Maputo

The Embassy’s role is to deepen bilateral political relations between Ireland and Mozambique; serve the needs of Irish citizens; strengthen trade, tourism and investment between our countries; and support Mozambique socio-economic development through a targeted development assistance programme.
The Embassy wishes to recruit a full-time Head Driver to lead the day-to-day transport operations. We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced and responsible Head Driver with knowledge of Diplomatic and/or NGO sector in Mozambique. The role will involve supporting Embassy operations.
Role Profile:
Responding to the Head of Administration, the Head Driver leads the day-to-day transport operations and end-to-end fleet management to ensure safe, compliant and cost effective mobility for the Mission in Maputo and provincial posts (Inhambane and Lichinga). The role involves fleet management, supervising drivers, plans and dispatches journeys, overseeing maintenance and suppliers, and delivering reliable transport that reduces risk, controls fuel/maintenance costs, and maximises vehicle availability in support of Embassy operations.
Key Responsibilities:
The precise range of duties will vary over time, according to the requirements of the Embassy. Significant out-of-hours work will be expected, but will be within the local employment law provisions.
This role involves a wide variety of tasks, including, but not limited to:
- Transport Operations & Scheduling: Plan and prioritise trips (including inter-provincial), allocate vehicles and drivers, confirm readiness (documents, equipment), and maintain journey and vehicle logs.
- Compliance & Documentation: Ensure adherence to Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade transport policies and local road laws; keep registrations, insurance and inspections current; maintain complete files (service histories, fuel/maintenance records, incident reports).
- Preventive Maintenance & Repairs: Run service schedules and safety checks (tyres, batteries, brakes); action repairs promptly to maximise availability; safeguard warranties and equipment condition.
- Fuel, Costs & Telematics: Administer fuel; track consumption and cost-per-km; use a vehicle-tracking system to monitor mileage and utilisation and to drive efficiency.
- Incident & Risk Management: Apply defensive-driving and journey-risk practices; manage accidents and breakdowns (notifications, recovery, reporting, corrective actions).
- Vendors & Procurement Support: Coordinate workshops and suppliers (maintenance, tyres, batteries, tracking, towing); monitor SLAs and quality; verify invoices prior to submission.
- Reporting & Governance: Produce concise monthly fleet reports (utilisation, fuel, costs, maintenance status, incidents) and support audits with accurate records.
- Asset Lifecycle: Contribute to vehicle selection/specifications; manage commissioning (registration, asset tagging) and end-of-life decommissioning/disposal with proper deregistration and record closure.
- People, Safety & Standards: Supervise drivers (including provincial), set rotas and manage expectations, deliver brief refreshers/toolbox talks, and model confidentiality, professionalism and courteous representation of the Embassy.
- Such other duties as may be required as directed by management.
Other duties will include:
- Driving the Ambassador to and from official engagements,
- Driving other Embassy staff as necessary, picking up official visitors as required;
- Maintaining the official vehicle (bringing for regular services, washing and cleaning etc.);
- Assisting in the renewal of Embassy’s car insurance, vehicle registration and any other administration related to the vehicles;
- Assisting with Embassy events – transporting and loading equipment as required;
- Assisting with maintenance issues at the Chancery and Residence as required.
Essential Requirements:
Education and Experience:
- Completed secondary education successfully;
- Minimum 5 years of professional driving and fleet support, including coordination/supervision;
- Experience with inter-provincial and inter-country travel and varied road conditions;
- Valid Mozambican driver’s licence Category B (Category C desirable);
Organisation & Technical:
- Strong planning and attention to detail;
- Practical knowledge of vehicle maintenance and cost control;
- Confident with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook (logs, checklists, email/calendars);
- Familiarity with GPS/vehicle tracking (e.g., CarTrack) and fuel management.
Languages & Communication:
- Fluent Portuguese with clear, courteous communication; good working English (reading, writing, speaking and listening).
- Leadership, Integrity & Reliability:
- Effective supervision of a small team; reliability, initiative and discretion;
- Punctuality and consistent professional conduct;
- Availability to work out-of-hours and additional hours, as required;
- The successful candidate must have a legal entitlement to live and work in Mozambique.
Desirable Requirements:
- Technical training in mechanics/logistics an advantage;
- Experience in Embassy/international or comparable corporate setting;
- Recently undertaken or history of defensive-driving training;
- Category C divers license;
- Experience working in or with a diplomatic mission/international organisation;
- Vendor/contract oversight (insurance, fuel, tracking, tyres, batteries, maintenance);
- Basic mechanics certification; first-aid; security/defensive-driving credentials.
Terms and Conditions of Employment:
- The successful candidates will be hired on a 12 months fixed-term contractual basis, with an option to extend, subject to satisfactory performance and Mission requirements;
- The position is based at Maputo Office – Embassy of Ireland Mozambique, Avenida Julius Nyerere 3630, Sommershield, Maputo, Mozambique;
- Monday to Friday, 39 hours per week, with standard office hours from 08:00am to 4:30pm
- Annual Leave entitlement 22 days per annum pro rata;
- The salary for the position is €14,935.58 per annum, paid locally on a monthly basis. Salaries are paid direct to a bank account, The successful candidate must have a bank account.
- The successful candidate must have a legal entitlement to live and work in Mozambique.
