Renco is recruiting a HSE Officer, to be based in Pemba, Mozambique.
Duties
Health & Safety Compliance

  • Ensure the camp/hotel complies with all local, national, and international health, safety, and environmental regulations. (Firefighting, first aid, evacuation orders, environmental audits and licences such as borreholes, generators, fire hydrants, firefighting equipment and extinguishers, first aid kits, lifts and air conditioning equipment, fuel equipment, chemical storage and hazardous waste)
  • Develop, implement, and monitor HSE policies and procedures tailored to hospitality and food service operations
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and hazard identifications. Maintaining all registers

Inspections & Audits

  • Carry out regular inspections of accommodation facilities, kitchens, dining areas, laundry, and recreational areas. Must be able to manage HSE Management Systems files and documents
  • Identify unsafe conditions or practices and take corrective actions
  • Prepare reports and maintain records/registers of inspections and incidents

Incident & Accident Management

  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses; ensure root cause analysis is conducted
  • Maintain incident logs and produce regular safety reports
  • Recommend corrective and preventive actions

Training & Awareness

  • Conduct HSE induction for all new staff and visitors
  • Organize regular training sessions on fire safety, food safety, first aid, PPE use, emergency response, housekeeping, etc.
  • Promote a safety culture through campaigns and toolbox talks

Food Safety & Hygiene

  • Monitor food preparation, handling, and storage to ensure compliance with food safety standards (e.g., HACCP)
  • Conduct daily hygiene inspections in kitchens and dining areas
  • Ensure kitchen staff are trained and compliant with food safety protocols

Environmental Management

  • Monitor waste management, water usage, and energy consumption
  • Ensure proper disposal of food waste, hazardous substances, and other waste materials
  • Support sustainability initiatives within the camp/hotel

Emergency Preparedness

  • Develop and maintain emergency response plans (fire, medical, evacuation, etc.).
  • Organize drills and evaluate readiness
  • Ensure availability and maintenance of firefighting equipment, first aid kits, and emergency exits
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain up-to-date records of inspections, trainings, incidents, and risk assessments
  • Submit regular HSE reports to management.
  • Assist in external audits and regulatory inspections.

Requisites

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or related field
  • NEBOSH IGC, OSHA certification, or equivalent is preferred
  • HACCP or food safety certification is an added advantage
  • 2–5 years’ experience in an HSE role, preferably in hospitality, camp management, or food services
  • Experience in high-occupancy environments such as remote camps, hotels, or staff accommodations is a plus
  • Strong knowledge of HSE regulations and best practices
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to train and motivate staff
  • Proficient in report writing and documentation
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
