BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

 

The WFP’s CSP 2022-2026 has been defined to support the Government of Mozambique on its fight towards poverty and hunger eradication. This four-year plan, which is aligned with national and UN priorities (e.g., SDG2), aims to revert the current trends on deteriorating food security caused by a complex set of environmental (including climate), social, economic, and political factors, by applying appropriate and risk-informed resilience approaches.

 

Within the WFP Mozambique Country Strategic Plan (2022-2026), Strategic Outcome 3 “Vulnerable and shock-affected communities, households, women and young people in targeted areas have more equitable, resilient, sustainable and climate-smart livelihoods through enhanced adaptive and productive capacities that enable them to meet their food and nutrition needs by 2030” is expected to be achieved through an integrated package of climate risk management, livelihood support, adaptive agriculture and smallholder agricultural market support interventions that strengthen the resilience of households, communities and food systems to climate shocks and stressors and ensure sustainable access to income opportunities and adequate and nutritious food for poor and marginalized people and communities.

 

WFP Mozambique Climate Change Adaptive Food Systems Unit (SO3) has developed a strategy that aims to provide a comprehensive package to vulnerable and smallholder farmers to improve their coping capacities to climate change and gain a more meaningful role in the economic development of the country.

 

The purpose of this assignment is: to assist in the engagement of the Climate Change Adaptive Food Systems (SO3) team in the proper actualization of the SO3 strategy; to support the implementation of on-going actions; to assist in strengthening partnership with Government, UN and other stakeholders; to assist in the design of high-quality programme/project proposals. In the eventual availability of additional time, support other resource mobilization and communication efforts.

 

  
ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1. Assist in the coordination of high-quality donor reports (European Union (EU), African Development Bank (AfDB), Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), amongst others) and engage with the donors on submission procedures.

2. Contribute to high quality project concept notes/ by supporting the engagement with relevant WFP units and external stakeholders.

3. Support spreading an in-depth understanding among WFP staff and other relevant stakeholders and partners regarding climate change adaptive food systems.

4. Assist in designing and implementing joint programs in collaboration with other units and UN agencies (WFP emergency response, nutrition, school feeding, social protection, FAO, IFAD, UNDP, IOM, UNHCR, etc.).

5. Support the operationalization of the WFP Mozambique strategy for the transition from humanitarian assistance to climate resilience by assisting with fund mobilization and fostering partnerships and collaboration.

6. Support in strengthening WFP’s positioning Mozambique on climate change adaptive food systems. 

7. Support drafting briefing documents for management meetings with donors and partners.

8. Serve as a focal point and coordinate donor field missions and other events such as Steering Committee meetings.

9. Be the focal point for the collection of communication material on on-going projects.

10. Serve as workstream focal point for the preparation of information products including PowerPoint decks and briefing notes to share information on climate resilience programmes with a variety of stakeholders.

11. Assist in the coordination and drafting of Country Briefs, Factsheets, Annual Country Reports, etc.

12. Any other duties as may be required by the supervisor.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

 

Education: Advanced university degree in Political Sciences, International Relations, Sociology or other social sciences

Experience: 1 year of experience in the field of external relations, grant management or any other relevant field in civil society, Non-Governmental Organizations, Academia, Government institutions or United Nations agencies.   

Knowledge & Skills:

– Strong writing and analytical skills, ability to research and transform information into useful knowledge, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and ability to work inclusively and collaboratively in a multi-cultural environment.

– Willing to work in multi-cultural settings and travel to different field locations and including challenging operating environments.

– Collaborative spirit able to liaise with a wide range of people at all levels and across different cultures.

Languages: Fluency in English. Working knowledge of Portuguese is a strong asset.
