Our client in Maputo is looking an Legal Advisor to join their team within the Tobacco Sector.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal advice and strategic guidance to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, mitigate risks, and support business objectives across multiple functions.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to stakeholders and lead initiatives that enhance operational efficiency and legal governance.
  • Counsel the business functions function in legal matters as part of the Legal team, to ensure compliance with legislation and provide comprehensive risk assessment when interpreting ambiguous legislation.
  • Lead the litigation activities and cases including strategizing and collaborating closely with external counsels, supervising the progress of cases and providing management with regular updates.

Requirements

  • A law degree (LLB or equivalent) or relevant professional qualification would be highly advantageous, though we are open to strong candidates with demonstrated practical expertise. Preferably, prior experience in a corporate legal, compliance, or in-house advisory role, or as a legal assistant/paralegal in an international or trade-related environment
  • A solid understanding of legal principles, with the ability to read, analyze, and summarize regulations, statutes, and compliance requirements applicable to our business activities (particularly in areas such as trade, customs, intellectual property, taxation, and corporate compliance in the relevant African jurisdiction).
  • Proven capability to explain complex legal rules and regulatory provisions clearly and concisely to non-legal team members and management, providing practical guidance on implications and required actions.
  • Strong research skills to identify and track updates to local laws, regulations, and government policies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, including the preparation of legal summaries, reports, and correspondence.
