Job Description

  • In the capacity of a Pilot B or Pilot A, duly licensed by the National Maritime Authority, shall carry out all types of pilotage operations required by the service, as per the monthly shift schedule.
  • Conduct pilotage operations such as berthing, unberthing, shifting, anchoring, and others, with or without the assistance of tugboats and mooring boats, coordinating the mooring team to assist during the maneuver.
  • Advise the Master of the vessel on which the pilotage operation will be performed regarding all conditions for entry/exit of the Port of Maputo, including its specific local conditions, winds, currents, characteristics of anchorage areas, berths, and vessels to be used during the pilotage operation, as well as any other information deemed necessary to safely conduct the operation.
  • Actively advise throughout the entire operation of entry/anchoring/berthing/unberthing, ensuring that the operation is carried out in a safe manner in compliance with port regulations, company policies, and international maritime safety standards.
  • Report to Port Control in all mandatory reporting zones, as well as comply with all other mandatory reports according to port regulations.
  • Direct all activities of tugboats, mooring boats, pilots, and mooring teams assigned to the maneuvers under his/her responsibility.
  • Prepare all reports required by port regulations in the designated areas.
  • Complete all documentation and records within the stipulated timeframe, including service forms and other pilotage records, and prepare and submit reports of vessel deficiencies to the Harbor Master and Chief Pilot.
  • Exercise the Stop Work policy if safety conditions in any aspect of the activity are not met to ensure safe execution of duties.
  • Ensure that all processes required by the Port Authority as well as by the Company are recorded and communicated in due time to the relevant entities.
  • Ensure, together with the Master, that all conditions regarding seaworthiness, stowage, and safety are within the required parameters for sound pilotage practices of the vessel.
  • Represent P&O Maritime in a manner that safeguards all requirements and act as the liaison onboard between the Ship’s Master and the Port Authority.
  • When designated as Coordinating Pilot, monitor port operations, maintain records, manage the dispatch and assignment of pilots, tugboats, mooring boats, and mooring teams. Prevent delays in the transportation and allocation of pilots and available resources to ensure optimal service delivery.
  • Advise the Ship’s Master on available anchorages and their conditions, including emergency anchorage options.
  • In case of emergency, initiate all agreed emergency procedures, assist in maritime rescue operations, and direct the movement of all available vessels under the guidance of the Chief Pilot and Harbour Master, always acting in the best interest of the Port and the Company.
  • Report within the limits required by the Company all accidents/incidents/near misses during operations, gathering all available information including statements and photographic evidence, for subsequent investigation, and cooperate fully to establish the facts.
  • Always maintain and throughout the operation a conduct that reflects the dignity of representing the Port and the Company, demonstrating a high level of professionalism in all activities.
  • The Master must inform the pilot that the vessel is seaworthy (properly equipped and manned in accordance with international regulations). In case of doubt, the pilot is obligated to report to the competent authorities that the vessel is not seaworthy or raise any other pertinent issues that might affect safe service delivery.
  • Ensure that all port and international regulations are being followed and act accordingly if they are not.
  • Conduct monthly emergency drills as well as other exercises in the Simulator, in line with the monthly training plan.
  • Actively contribute to the training of trainee pilots or pilots undergoing category progression, sharing knowledge and supporting their development.
  • Maintain valid all certifications and other documents required for the exercise of pilotage duties.
  • Respect service hours and the duty roster, ensuring timely arrival at the base to enable operations to proceed as required by Port Control.
  • Actively participate in all training sessions and drills included in the monthly training and drill plan or others required during incident investigations or unplanned but Company-mandated sessions.
  • Participate in annual pilot forums or any clarification or operational sessions deemed necessary by the Company.
  • Report to Port Control and P&O operations any visible damage to buoys, lights, etc., along the channel during the execution of pilotage duties.

Requirements:

  • Mozambican Nationality
  • Hold a Certificate of Competence (CoC) as Pilot B or Pilot A
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the English language, both written and spoken.
  • Additional training and safety courses as per the STCW95 Convention.
  • Fulfil all necessary requirements to obtain a pilotage license for the Port of Maputo.
  • Solid Computer literacy.
