Job Description
Job Overview:
The Principal Sustainability Spec is responsible for interpreting internal or external business issues and recommending best practices. They will be tasked with solving complex Sustainability-related problems and will work independently with minimal guidance. The Principal Sustainability Spec may be responsible for leading functional teams or projects and is regarded as a specialist in Sustainability. As such, they must have in-depth expertise in Sustainability and Governance.
Responsibilities
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
The Principal Sustainability Spec is responsible for one or more of the following disciplines (Sustainability, Environmental).
Sustainability
- Work strategically with Human Resources, Finance, and all business areas.
- Lead assessments of social impacts, defining mitigation and social management plans.
- Drive adoption and encourage best practices internally.
- Advise on best practices in social performance.
- Client account management, engagement with project funders, affected communities, and other stakeholders.
- Contribute to business development and winning activities.
- Demonstrate leadership in Quality, Health, and Safety.
- Prepare and define project bids.
- Coordinate and keep a record of the company’s volunteering initiatives including personal sustainability pledge
- Proactively deliver and manage time and quality delivery of sustainability advisory services, and project-related tasks to meet budget, time frame, and quality targets, exceeding client expectations.
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve sustainability outcomes for infrastructure projects such as alternate material, resource, and construction efficiencies.
- Gain awareness of and familiarity with the commercial aspects of projects to develop commercial skills.
- Deliver Infrastructure Sustainability Ratings and other sustainability ratings.
- Investigate emerging sustainability issues, evaluating the risk they pose to the scheme while identifying and implementing solutions.
- Work with international regulators, industry, and other relevant organizations to address emerging challenges to the sustainability and integrity of the company.
- Manage, provide support and guidance within the wider team, and assist with the management of budgets and commissions on behalf of the service, as required.
Environmental
- Lead cross-functional workshops to align sustainability goals with business strategy.
- Represent McDermott at external events, presenting on sustainability initiatives.
- Spearhead the development of McDermott’s sustainability innovation roadmap.
- Initiate partnerships with NGOs or academic institutions for sustainability research.
- Contribute to McDermott’s thought leadership in industry publications.
- Develop and deliver strategic sustainability training programs for leadership.
- Lead the integration of emerging technologies for sustainable project execution.
- Chair the strategic planning committee for McDermott’s global sustainability goals.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive global sustainability communication strategy.
- Lead McDermott’s participation in global sustainability collaborations and initiatives.
- Advocate for sustainability considerations in high-profile external partnerships.
- Drive the development of sustainability policies in alignment with global frameworks.
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications and Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Business Administration, or relevant work experience in a related field.
- Master’s degree in Sustainability, Social Responsibility, International Development, Human Rights, or a similar field is strongly preferred.
- 8+ years of experience in corporate social responsibility or sustainability within a multi-national organization
- 3+ year experience in a leadership role or similar role.
- Ability to think outside the box to deliver sustainable solutions for our clients, and be a multidisciplinary worker.
- A flexible approach to challenges and possesses an ability to develop good relationships with internal and external clients.
- Passion for sustainability with a focus on delivering to client needs.
- Can confidently assess complex technical information, which may sometimes be incomplete or contradictory, to make decisions or recommendations and be able to communicate it to a wide variety of stakeholders.
- Good project management and analytical skills Strong communication skills – reporting, and presentation.
- Ability to influence internal and external stakeholders and build effective relationships.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with other members of the team.
- Self-motivated, with diligence, integrity, and ambition.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
