Supervisor – Systems Controller Power Operations AT

CBE Southern Africa is looking for A qualified Supervisor – Systems Controller Power Operations AT is sought to lead and coordinate Main Control Room activities. This role provides critical technical leadership to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient generation and distribution of electricity, steam, and water for the Smelter Complex, ATA Refinery, and third-party customers. The supervisor will uphold compliance with all regulatory, safety, and environmental standards, assuming full operational authority in the absence of the Manager – Control Room Operations. This position is vital for maintaining continuous energy supply and operational excellence within a dynamic environment.

• • Manage the operation, troubleshooting, and performance monitoring of Gas Turbines, Steam Turbines, Boilers,
• HRSGs, Fuel gas system including compressors and heaters, Liquid fuel system, Water treatment systems, Sea
• water system, Cooling towers, compressed air systems, and potline rectifiers to ensure optimal energy
• generation, maximize system reliability, and minimize unplanned downtime;
• • Lead operational tests, including auxiliaries’ changeovers, safety tests, turbine washing, and efficiency checks,
• to validate equipment performance, identify potential issues proactively, and optimize system efficiency and
• safety;
• • Manage and optimize power flows across the Power plant, including energy distribution to smelter systems, to
• sustain a continuous energy supply;
• • Monitor system performance through PMS (XA-21), SCADA, and DCS systems, leveraging trend data to
• maximize efficiency, availability, and reliability;
• • Lead emergency response related to control room operations during plant upsets, equipment failures, or grid
• disturbances to minimize downtime, protect critical assets, ensure personnel safety, and maintain operational
• and regulatory compliance;
• • Manage HV/LV switching operations, isolations, and PTW issuance to safeguard personnel and equipment,
• maintain reliable electrical systems, and ensure compliance with operational and safety procedures;
• • Ensure timely, data-driven operational decisions to minimize production losses, protect critical equipment, and
• mitigate financial and operational risks;
• • Manage power flow simulation studies, IPSA analyses, and network reliability assessments to ensure stable
• and reliable power system operation, mitigate risks, support operational planning, and maintain compliance with
• technical standards;
• • Identify and monitor equipment-related issues during incidents by analysing DCS and SCADA data to
• determine root causes and ensure operational continuity;
• • Ensure accurate documentation of all plant activities in the shift log and the preparation of daily generation and
• efficiency reports using comprehensive data from energy, water, steam, and fuel meters to enable informed
• operational decisions and optimal plant performance;
• • Liaise with the ATA refinery team to optimize steam, water, & power and ensure an uninterrupted supply while
• coordinating with the Reduction team to enhance power delivery and maintain compliance with contractual and
• regulatory obligations;
• • Engage with internal stakeholders (Potline, ATA Refinery, Maintenance, and Safety teams) to align operations
• and support production priorities, ensuring coordinated power management and uninterrupted process
• performance;
• • Mentor and coach operators and field staff, lead on-the-job training, and drive succession planning to build
• technical expertise, strengthen team capability, and ensure readiness for critical operational roles;
• • Ensure continuous, safe, and reliable control room operations in the absence of the Manager – Control Room
• Operations by taking full accountability for operational decision-making and system performance;
• • Promote a culture of operational discipline, safety adherence, and continuous improvement to enhance plant
• reliability, protect personnel and assets, and drive operational excellence;
• • Ensure compliance with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 50001, and environmental KPIs, while advancing
• sustainability initiatives to optimize operational practices, minimize environmental impact, and align with
• corporate energy and sustainability objectives.

• • Diploma in Electrical, Mechanical, or related Engineering (Bachelor’s preferred);
• • Remote High Voltage authorization;
• • Strong decision-making and crisis leadership capabilities;
• • Proficiency in PMS/SCADA/DCS and plant monitoring systems;
• • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills;
• • Coaching, mentoring, and team development ability.
