The Tractor Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating agricultural tractors and related equipment used in sugar cane loading, hauling, field preparation, and other logistical activities. The role ensures timely execution of field and transport operations, supports harvesting workflows, and maintains the tractor in good working condition through daily inspections and proper use. The Tractor Operator contributes to operational productivity, equipment longevity, and safe field operations through disciplined, skilled, and compliant tractor handling.
Key Responsibilities
Tractor Operation & Field Activities
- Land Preparation: Operate tractors and implements (such as ploughs, harrows, rippers, and rotavators) to prepare fields for planting, including soil tillage, levelling, and seedbed preparation.
- Operate various types of agricultural tractors used for hauling sugar cane trailers, field support, and other tasks.
- Transport sugar cane from harvesting points to loading zones or collection depots.
- Perform field work as assigned, such as towing implements, loading support, or assisting with harvesting logistics.
- Ensure equipment is operated safely in fields, muddy terrain, steep slopes, and haulage routes.
- Follow designated routes and adhere to production schedules.
Equipment Inspection & Maintenance
- Conduct pre-start inspections, including oil, water, lights, tyres, and hydraulic systems.
- Report defects, breakdowns, or abnormalities to supervisors immediately.
- Maintain cleanliness of the tractor and ensure tools and accessories are stored correctly.
- Assist workshop teams with basic maintenance tasks when necessary.
- Record daily hour-meter readings accurately.
Safety & Compliance
- Operate machinery in accordance with company safety procedures, SOPs, and legal requirements.
- Use required PPE at all times and ensure safety guards and equipment are functional.
- Observe safe driving practices, especially around loaders, harvesters, and pedestrian zones.
- Report hazards, unsafe behaviour, or environmental risks on site.
Loading, Hauling & Field Logistics
- Connect, secure, and inspect trailers before operations.
- Transport cane loads safely to avoid spillage, rollover, or overloading.
- Assist with aligning tractors for loading by mechanical loaders or harvesters.
- Cooperate with field teams to maintain smooth harvesting and loading flow.
- Follow instructions from field supervisors, loaders, and logistic coordinators.
Administrative Duties
- Complete daily log sheets, checklists, and fuel usage records.
- Maintain accurate records of hours worked, kilometres driven, and loads transported.
- Support accurate reporting for planning, payroll, and fleet management.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
Educational Requirements
- Grade 12/ Matric (preferred).
- Accredited Tractor Operator Certificate or recognised competency training (essential).
Experience
- 1–3 years operating agricultural tractors or similar machinery.
- Experience in sugar cane or agricultural logistics (advantageous).
- Understanding of field operations, harvesting cycles, and tractor mechanics.
Technical Skills
- Ability to operate agricultural tractors safely and efficiently.
- Knowledge of trailer coupling, hydraulic systems, and implements.
- Basic mechanical understanding of engines and field equipment.
- Ability to read and follow work instructions and field maps.
- Record-keeping skills (logbooks, checklists, hour meters).
