About the Chamber

The UK–Mozambique Chamber of Commerce is an independent, member-funded business platform created to promote trade, investment, partnerships and private sector development between Mozambique and the United Kingdom.

The Chamber is entering its first phase of operations and is looking for a credible, delivery-focused General Manager to help turn its strategy, membership base and institutional mandate into practical results.

About the role

The General Manager will lead the day-to-day establishment and operationalisation of the Chamber, working under the strategic direction of the Board.

This is not a ceremonial role. It is a hands-on start-up leadership position requiring operational discipline, commercial judgement, relationship management and the ability to build trust quickly with founding members, prospective members, public institutions, partners and service providers.

The successful candidate will be expected to drive member value, support financial sustainability, coordinate governance and help position the Chamber as a credible business facilitation platform.

Key responsibilities

The General Manager will be responsible for:

  • Leading the day-to-day establishment and operation of the Chamber.
  • Translating Board priorities into a practical workplan, budget and operating rhythm.
  • Driving membership growth, onboarding, retention and member value delivery.
  • Managing relationships with founding members, prospective members, partners and institutions.
  • Overseeing the Chamber’s programme of activities, including events, business briefings, introductions, advocacy processes, sector work and knowledge products.
  • Supporting structured engagement with the British High Commission, Mozambican institutions and relevant UK–Mozambique business stakeholders, within agreed governance boundaries.
  • Overseeing financial and administrative discipline, including budget monitoring, payment follow-up, internal controls and outsourced support.
  • Supervising the Trade Officer, interns, consultants or service providers engaged by the Chamber.
  • Supporting Board reporting, annual planning, performance tracking and institutional accountability.

Candidate profile

We are looking for a candidate with strong evidence of delivery, credibility and judgement.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Experience leading or helping build an organisation, platform, programme, association, business-facing initiative or advisory function.
  • Relevant experience in areas such as trade promotion, investment promotion, business development, advocacy, market-entry support, public-private dialogue, institutional development, international business or member-based organisations.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills and confidence working with senior private sector and public sector audiences
  • Ability to operate effectively in a lean start-up structure with limited resources, evolving priorities and high expectations.
  • Strong commercial and member-value orientation.
  • Good understanding of governance, accountability, internal controls and reputation-sensitive environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Portuguese
  • Equivalent or non-linear professional backgrounds will be considered where candidates can demonstrate strong delivery capacity, judgement, market knowledge and stakeholder credibility.

Desirable qualifications

  • University degree in Business Administration, Economics, Law, International Relations, Public Policy or a related field.
  • Postgraduate qualification, MBA or equivalent professional experience would be an advantage.
  • Experience in Mozambique–UK, bilateral, regional or cross-border business environments would be valuable.

Personal attributes

The successful candidate should bring:

  • High standards of integrity and professionalism.
  • Practical problem-solving ability.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure.
  • Cultural sensitivity and confidence working across business and institutional environments.
  • Strong execution discipline and willingness to build systems from the ground up.
