Job Description

The CIB Executive is accountable for leading and executing FNB Moçambique’s (FNBM) Corporate and Institutional Banking strategy in alignment with FNBM’s strategic priorities as aligned with the FirstRand Group, FirstRand broader Africa, RMB, and other group customer segments that may be relevant in executing strategy from time to time. The role is responsible for driving sustainable growth, quality earnings and superior risk-adjusted returns across the Corporate, Institutional, Global Markets, Investment Banking and Transactional Banking franchises, while contributing meaningfully to the overall growth and diversification objectives of the Bank.

Reporting into the Country Chief Executive Officer and working with the FNBM Exco, the incumbent provides strategic leadership to a multidisciplinary team and is accountable for building a high-performing, client-centric franchise that delivers integrated solutions to clients. This includes fostering strong partnerships across RMB, FNB, Ashburton and Group functions to maximize franchise value, strengthen market competitiveness and support the delivery of shared strategic objectives.

The role also serves as a key representative of the Bank with regulators, clients, industry bodies and other stakeholders, ensuring effective governance, regulatory compliance and sound risk management. In addition, the CIB Executive contributes to the development of Mozambique’s financial markets and supports the successful execution of FNBM’s broader strategic ambitions.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategy and Business Leadership

  • Define, own and execute FNBM’s Corporate and Institutional Banking strategy, ensuring alignment with FirstRand Group, FirstRand broader Africa and RMB strategic priorities.
  • Provide overall leadership of the CIB franchise, driving sustainable growth, market relevance and long-term value creation.
  • Identify and capitalise on cross-border opportunities, leveraging the broader Africa FirstRand network to enhance client outcomes and franchise performance.
  • Ensure alignment and effective collaboration across in-country ExCo, RMB, FirstRand broader Africa and Group stakeholders to deliver strategic objectives.

2. Client Franchise Growth and Market Leadership

  • Lead the acquisition, retention and growth of Corporate and Institutional Banking relationships, with a focus on deepening existing client portfolios and expanding market share.
  • Drive a client-centric coverage model that delivers integrated solutions across lending, transactional banking, global markets, investment banking and advisory services.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with key clients, regulators, industry bodies and market participants.
  • Contribute to the development and deepening of Mozambique’s financial markets, promoting innovative and sustainable banking solutions.

3. Financial Performance and Balance Sheet Management

  • Deliver sustainable growth in assets, liabilities, revenues, profitability and risk-adjusted returns in line with approved financial and strategic targets.
  • Ensure effective balance-sheet management through close collaboration with Treasury, Risk and Finance functions.
  • Optimise capital allocation, portfolio quality and funding structures to support growth while maintaining prudent risk levels.
  • Drive the identification and conversion of cross-sell and referral opportunities across the FirstRand franchise.

4. Risk, Governance and Regulatory Management

  • Maintain strong governance, regulatory compliance and risk management practices across all CIB activities.
  • Ensure adherence to local regulatory requirements, Group policies and applicable governance frameworks.
  • Promote a culture of ethical conduct, accountability and sound risk management across the franchise.
  • Represent the Bank in engagements with regulators and key external stakeholders on matters relating to Corporate and Institutional Banking.

5. People and Executive Leadership

  • Lead, develop and inspire a high-performing multidisciplinary CIB team.
  • Build organisational capability and succession pipelines to ensure the long-term sustainability of the franchise.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, client centricity and performance excellence.
  • Contribute as a member of the FNB Moçambique Executive Committee to the overall strategic direction, performance and success of the Bank.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Required Qualification: Relevant post-graduate degree (e.g. CA / CFA / Analytics / MBA)
  • Experience: 10+ years’ relevant banking experience, proven experience in leading large, multidisciplinary teams and complex banking businesses at a senior executive level.
  • Demonstrated track record of delivering sustainable revenue growth, profitability and risk-adjusted returns within a regulated financial services environment.
  • Strong understanding of corporate banking, structured finance, transaction banking, treasury, capital markets and investment banking products and services.
  • Experience engaging with regulators, government stakeholders, boards and executive committees on strategic, regulatory and market-related matters.
  • Sound knowledge of risk management, governance, compliance, capital management and balance-sheet optimisation principles.
