General Superintendent – Power Operations

CBE Southern Africa is looking for A qualified General Superintendent – Power Operations to coordinate with the Shift Charge Engineer in the efficient, safe, and effective operation of Power Generation and Water production. This role is crucial for meeting the overall energy needs of the Smelter Complex and, where applicable, third-party customers. The incumbent will also assist in the safe isolation and normalization of HV and LV systems, playing a vital role in maintaining continuous and reliable energy supply for the Midstream/Energy function.

• • Operates and services the compressed air plant to enable the continuous generation of compressed air to
• satisfy power plant and Smelter needs;
• • Operates and services the Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) to enable the uninterrupted supply of
• steam to satisfy operational requirements;
• • Manages the Permit to Work and equipment isolation for the power plant to ensure maintenance and service
• work can be carried out safely;
• • Identifies problem areas of plant and equipment, diagnoses faults, and takes corrective actions to minimise
• production losses arising from plant outages;
• • Carries out high voltage and low voltage switching as instructed, including related risk assessments, and is
• responsible for equipment isolation and issuing relevant safety documents for maintenance staff;
• • Supports Shift Manager/Shift Charge Engineer in initiating power shutdowns as required and ensures power
• restoration activities with minimum disruption during emergencies;
• • Interacts with Potline supervisors for power reductions, rectifier isolation activities, low voltage equipment, and
• mechanical plant;
• • Ensures that all shift personnel strictly adhere to all safety policies, practices, and procedures to minimize the
• risk of accidents and injuries;
• • Ensures that all shift personnel are trained across the operations areas to carry out all duties in a safe and
• effective manner;
• • Supports Shift Manager and Shift Charge Engineer for 5s implementation, company safety standards, and
• PTW system;
• • Manages the operating regime of plant and equipment, particularly those approaching or past 75% of life span,
• to reduce failures or potential for failure;
• • Supports Shift Manager and Shift Charge Engineer for compiling ISO9001:2008, ISO14001:2004,
• ISO50001:2013, OHSAS18001:2007 standards, company safety standards, and PTW system;
• • Supports the Shift Manager in monitoring correct power flows, power flow simulation studies, fault level
• calculations, coordination with control room staff, and handling of High Voltage equipment abnormalities.

• • Diploma level in Engineering, preferably a Degree level in Electrical Engineering;
• • HV authorisation is desirable;
• • Good experience in the operation of Gas Turbine Combined Cycle Power stations;
• • Proficiency in planning, organising, and problem-solving skills;
• • Strong communication and influencing skills;
• • Demonstrated coaching and mentoring abilities;
• • Excellent troubleshooting skills;
• • Ability to run HV simulation software.
